Heston edge out Vale in last League match of the season
By Derek Douglas
Double from Armstrong secures 3 points
A double midway through the first half was enough for Heston to grab all 3 points in their final League match of the season. Vale lost their captain Connelly after only 18 minutes as he landed awkwardly after a clearance. Heston dominated the early stages and it was no surprise when they opened the scoring in the 23rd minute as Dan Armstrong reacted quickest after a TOM SMITH header bounced back off the base of the post with Dan heading the ball back into the net to put the visitors 1-0 ahead. There was a setback for Rovers a couple of minutes later as keeper Kirkaldie was forced off with an ankle injury as he twisted his ankle on a divot collecting a long through ball, Mcculloch coming off the bench to replace the injured Kirkaldie Within another couple of minutes Rovers had doubled their lead and it was Armstrong that did the damage as he bulleted a Newlands cross from the left, high into the net to give Rovers a 2 goal advantage. Heston continued to dominate possession for the remainder of the half. With several minutes added due to both first half injuries the home side grabbed a lifeline with the ball bundled home from close range as a deep corner from the left found Corbett in space at the back post and his low drive was turned home from close range. H-T 1-2
The home side buoyed by the goal before the interval enjoyed the majority of possession in the 2nd half but couldn't find a way through the stubborn Rovers defence. The closest the home side came was an angled cross that seemed to be heading just under the bar before Mcculloch managed to tip the ball over the bar.
Rovers held on to collect all 3 points as the daylight faded at New Abbey and moved up to 8th in the League table in their final League match of the 2018 - 2019 campaign.
