Heston Rovers Founded 1978 (20/06/08)

The club was founded in the Lochside area of Dumfries by local joiner Frankie Harris and his pal Eddie McCormack in 1978.Two of the first players to play for the club were Steve Rice & Keith Nichol (now coaching at the club) and James Scaife. The first sponsor of the club (by purchasing the first set of strips for the newly formed club)was the owner of the Cairndale Hotel in the town. He had a boat moored at the island of Heston in the Solway Firth called ''The Heston Rover'' and suggested that this would be a good name for the club. As it happened , the area in which the club first played in Lochside,Dumfries also had a bus route called Heston Avenue - so the name was ideal ! The club soon re-located to Locharbriggs and then to the Kingholm and again to Parkhead (Noblehill) in Dumfries before moving to Maryfield in Georgetown (it's current base) circa 1995/96.
A hard working committee with George Gilston as chairman, and a very successful under 16's coach Stuart Jardine, steered
the club to a very successful period from 1986 - 1991, winning two league titles, three Rotary Cup wins and two Ryedale cup wins at under 16's.
The club started to grow in popularity and membership. The clubs committee decided that a colour scheme was required as all the teams were playing in various strips and the black and white stripes became the official colour around season 2001/2002.
The current captain of Annan Athletic's first ever SPL side Chris Jardine started his career at Heston Rovers and named the club in his recent interview in The Sun newspaper in August 2008.
The current club badge was designed in a competition run by the club and was won by Gary Kerr , a youth player with the club.
In September 2007 the club took delivery of three portacabins which linked together to provide changing facilities, toilets and a meeting room and strorage. The provision of facilities meant the club could now play competitive games at Maryfield.
The provision of changing rooms also enabled the club to introduce an all girls section in the summer of 2007.
The official opening of the new changing rooms was on 31/05/08. Craig Brown CBE was guest of honour and performed the official opening.
Until 2008 the club was only a youth football club. In the summer of 2008 the club merged with Dumfries FC to form its first ever adult team who play in the Southern Counties League in SW Scotland. The scorer of the first ever competitive goal for the new adult team was David Borthwick v Fleet Star FC in July 2008. The first player to come through our youth system and score in a competitive game for our senior team was Jaime Phillips v Annan Athletic on 30/08/08. The club was awarded the prestigeous Quality Mark 'standard' award by the Scottish FA in March 2008 in recognition of the management of the club to Scottish FA standards. Heston Rovers U11s took to the hallowed Hampden turf at half- time against Glasgow Athletic at the 2008 Scottish Cup Final on 24 May between Glasgow Rangers and Queen of the South - the 7 a side game finished 0-0. Queens lost 3-2 in a thrilling cup final. QoS scorer that day and club captain 'Sir' Jim Thompson regularly attends Heston Rovers annual trophy nights in May/June each year.
In the Summer of 2010 our Southern Counties vacated Glencaple to move to Maryfield where the first game was played on 18/08/10 against Nithsdale Wanderers. Alex Taylor scored the first goal at Maryfield, unfortunately we lost 3 - 2.
