originating from Ayr, raymond started playing competative football age 11 with the newly formed Valspar Boys Club founded by Jim Gourlay of Valspar Paints. After 4 seasons here he moved to Somerset Park to play for Ayr United Boys Club where football development and coaching reached a higher level and by competing against quality teams from the Glasgow and District Leagues. 2 seasons followed playing with Ayr Boswell before moving to amatuer side Minishant. At this point raymond was selected to play for Scotland Amatuers and was on the scoring sheet once against Inverness Caley. Junior sides Muirkirk & Whitletts Vics were next for Raymond before moving to Dumfries. Once in Dumfries, Raymond played most of his football with Dumfries High School F.Ps, through the amatuer league and continued when they joined the southern counties league. DHSFPs amalgamated with Dumfries Amatuers and another 6 seasons there saw raymond completing 30 non stop years of playing football. The Boyd family have a history in scottish football with Raymonds uncle John Boyd playing with Greenock Morton in the 1950s/60s, his cousin Martin Boyd played and managed Ayrshire top side Knockintiber for 25 years and his father Thomas Boyd scoring the winning goal in the scottish amatuer cup final replay, for Minishant, at Ibrox after a draw at Hampden.
